Recenzo: Rubenaj refrenoj

This summer, North American Esperantists are quite proud of the 33rd year of NASK (North American Esperanto Summer Workshop), which this year will be held outside the San Francisco area for the first time. But we here often tend to forget that in 2000 Barlaston in England celebrated the 40th occurrence of the summer school there. This booklet is a compendium of some of the lectures that were presented during that summer school. (1)

The lectures really have no linking subject (except that they all relate to Esperanto). In "The Fortieth Anniversary of the Barlaston Courses" poetess Marjorie Boulton discusses the history of the courses. William Simcock presents "A Tribute to a Noble Worker for Esperanto: Horace Barks", who obviously was one of the initiators of the summer courses. (2) Anna Löwenstein gives us information about "The Background of the Novel The Stone City", about a young Celtic woman enslaved and carried off to Rome, which she wrote a few years ago (an English version is also available). Tim Carr tries to analyze the well-known sonnet cycle about World War II "Kalman Kalocsay's Through the Storm". (3) In "A Great City Revisited: The Art of Translation and Esperanto Theater" Paul Gubbins interestingly, and topically (4), discusses the modern art of translation not as transporting from language to language but from medium to medium. Renato Corsetti ends the cycle with "The International Language Between Europe and Elsewhere", a sketch about the state of Esperanto throughout the world outside of "The Mighty Continent".

I found the book interesting, but perhaps non-Esperanto-speakers would not find it so to the same extent.

(1) The links between Barlaston and Esperanto are such that when the Esperanto Association of Britain sold its London office — for (it is said) quite a large sum — it moved into a new office in the Wedgwood Memorial College of Barlaston.

  (2) And, perhaps more importantly, founder of the pub "La Verda Stelo" in Stoke-on-Trent ...

  (3) Interestingly, in the manuscript, Carr, when analyzing the sonnet "The Battle of France", speaking of the line "Oh, where are you, Aëtius?" wrote something similar to "To understand the allusion in the final line ... the reader has to know or research Greek mythology very deeply". The copyeditor luckily pointed out that Aëtius was the Roman general-dictator who beat Attila at Chalons-sur-Marne, and has no relation to Greek mythology. Kalocsay's allusion was, of course, to the Hunnish — a popular term for German — reinvasion of France.

  (4) One of the very popular movies of this season is sure to be Spider-Man, which is a translation from the comic-book medium. I've already read the novel based on the movie; so we're talking here about a three-medium translation.
