Oni malkonstruos kaj rekonstruos, mal kaj re, re kaj mal!

Recenzo: Nobela novelaro / Review: Nobel Short Stories

Jen sep noveloj de tri Nobelpremiitoj svedaj. Laŭ mia sperto, vi trovos ne ĉiun novelon ŝatinda, sed ankaŭ trovos almenaŭ unu juvelon, kaj eble pli. Tio kompreneble dependas je la personaj preferoj.

Here are seven short stories by three Swedish Nobel Laureates. My experience suggests that you will not appreciate every short story, but you will also find at least one jewel, and maybe more. This of course depends on your personal preferences.

Lagerkvist — author of the novel Barrabas, which became a quite forgettable English-language movie — gives us two stories. I liked the four-page "Father and I", from the year 1924, which is a good illustration of the different effects of day and night in the Swedish countryside. I found the surrealistic "The Demanding Guest" from 1919, in which an impecunious guest finds himself in a very strange hotel, not as likeable. (1)

I found Eyvind Johnson's stories most likeable of the three — perhaps because they were the most direct. In "A Man in Etolia" (1932) he gives us the hard life of the ancient Greek Dekatos, whom later generations would remember by another name. And "A Stop in Swamp Country" (1934) shows how the facilanimity of a railway brakeman who has suddenly quit his job can become a national menace — at least in the minds of witnesses. (2)

Verdire, estus ne tute ĝuste nomi ĉi tiujn tri verkaĵojn "noveloj"; ili tamen gustas same bone!

It is not too surprising that in three stories Harry Martinson speaks largely of journeys by ship; he later became known for a much longer journey in a ship never seen before on a sea much wider than the Atlantic. (3) Here, he takes us, with less ambition, to prewar "Rio de Janeiro" (1933), describes for us an ordinary sailor's daily life both in modern and Napoleonic times, in "Ocean As Dream-Game and Reality" (1933), and then takes us through the ship canals of northern Europe in "Canals and Atlantic" (1933). Truth to tell, it's not quite right to name these three works "short stories"; but they taste just as good!

With respect to the translation, let me only say that I myself could not tell the difference between it and a well-done original.

(1) You can find other translations from Lagerkvist here. Among them is another translation, by Ferenc Szilágyi, of "The demanding guest", under the title "La pretendema gasto".

  (2) Information about Eyvind Johnson's election to the Swedish Academy in the fifties, together with another of his short stories, "Kari", can be found here .

  (3) I'm speaking of the epic poem Aniara, which was translated into Esperanto by Bertil Nilsson and William Auld and which appeared as an extraordinary publication in the East-West series.
