Historio de la volapuka movado

Johann Martin Schleyer (1831-1912) aperigis en 1879 sian lingvo-projekton Volapuko (Volapŭk ,mondlingvo’). Okdek tri jarojn poste Johann Schmidt publikigis historion pri ties movado.

Recenzo: Historio de la universala lingvo Volapuko/Review: History of the World Language Volapuk

Although the majority of people learn Esperanto in order to use it, there remains a small but non-negligible group of adherents whose interest related to the more general idea of planned languages. It is they who should be interested by this book, apparently written in 1962, which discusses the first planned language to acquire a fairly large community of adherents.

Schmidt lovingly sketches the history of the language Volapük from Schleyer's inspiration in 1879 through the very successful eighties, the first strains (in Bavaria) in the Volapük movement, the reform battle between Schleyer and Kerckhoffs, the slow melting away of the movement in the nineties, the near disappearance in the first decade of the twentieth century, and the near but aborted renaissance after Arie De Jong's reforms. The book ends somewhat optimistically; despite De Jong's death in 1957, as late as 1962 Volapükagased in Amsterdam (who published the original of this booklet) evidently planned an ambitious publishing program (was it ever realized?).

But I would not call this history definitive. Schmidt dedicates to much space to long lists, one for each year, of "important" Volapük speakers, cities with clubs, and books published in the language (1) (which he also causes to reappear, in the right place but redundantly, in several useful indexes), and too little space to analysis of the successes and problems of the Volapük movement. On the other hand, he does not tend to be especially judgmental about e.g. the principals in the reform battle, and gives as much respect to Kerckhoffs as to Schleyer. We need, in future, a somewhat more analytical history of Volapük.

Two matters strike me as very interesting. One relates to the three congresses of Volapük. I've always pictured them as huge masses of Volapük adherents, swarming everywhere. Schmidt does not give numbers of partcipants for the second and third congresses, but mentions that 150 people took part in the first — somewhat fewer than a quarter of the number who visited the first Esperanto World Congress two decades later, and only 50% more than were present at the largest All California Esperanto Conference that I remember.

The other question relates to the number of adherents of Volapük. Schmidt rejects occasional estimates of four million, but unhesitatingly accepts one million. But it seems to me, from the number of publications, the participation in the first congress, and the distribution of clubs that the number has to be less, and that the chief center of Volapük enthusiasm remained throughout the history of the language the heart of Europe (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Switzerland), the Low Countries (the Netherlands, Belgium) and possibly France, with only relatively small penetrations into other places, although these "other places", very widely scattered, were found throughout the world.

The translation is not bad, but I have to complain that twice on one page Combot uses the word estimo instead of the correct takso (estimate).

Libro utila por tiuj, kiuj ŝatas detalojn, sed malpli utila por tiuj, kiuj deziras klarigojn.

A book useful for those who like details, but less useful for those who want explanations.

  (1) It was a great pleasure for me to see in the list the name of the book Bienalak by Theodor Storm; and in fact on p. 28 Schmidt uses the beginning of that novella to compare Schleyer's and De Jong's variants of Volapük. I first encountered the original, Immensee, when I was a boy and found it among my mother's old high-school German-language texts. The Esperanto version is Imenlago and can be found in PDF format at the late Franko Luin's eLibrejo.
