Recenzo: La nokta patrolo / Review: The Night Patrol

Per "The Night Stalker", "Special Unit 2" kaj The Dresden Files usonanoj jam konatiĝis kun la preternatura subtero de Ĉikago.

Via "The Night Stalker", "Special Unit 2" and The Dresden Files Americans have already become acquainted with the supernatural underground of Chicago. Similarly, readers of this novel can get acquainted with the supernatural underground of Moscow.

The 13-year-old Egor, while traveling on the metro, suddenly hears attractive music. Leaving the metro, he follows it to a side street where he meets two young people with long, sharp and hungry teeth.

In the same metro is Anton. A magician of average power, Anton functions as an "office rat" at the Night Patrol, representatives of the Light, who are fighting not to bring success to the Good but to make impossible a disequilibrium between Light and Darkness, which could lead to global catastrophe. For the first time the chief of the Night Patrol has given Anton an operational assignment, to go out onto the streets and solve some still undefined problem. In the metro Anton finds three: a young woman with a whirlwind that cannot be dissipated over her head, sign of a strong curse fixed by an evil but superpowerful magician, which will be able to kill the young woman and simultaneously cause a global catastrophe; the hunting music of hungry vampires; and a young boy who apparently has still unformed but huge magical capabilities. Anton's job through the entire book remains triple: to save the young woman — and the world — from the funnel, which is almost ready to reach its culmination; to catch and destroy an unregistered female vampire; and to convince the boy to choose the way of the Light instead of the much easier but also much worse way of the Darkness. And he has to do this amid growing doubt about the true purpose of the Night Patrol.

This is apparently the first of three volumes which will sketch the adventures and development of Anton, of Egor, and perhaps of Svetlana, the young woman with the whirlwind. And I certainly want to see more about the Arctic owl Olga.

An important problem for me was the quality of the translation. The translator was obviously competent, but the book read like a draft, as if all doubtful words had not been checked, errors not found, no polishing had been done. An important problem at Esperanto publishers seems to be a lack of careful editing, and Impeto is obviously no exception to that rule.

I first observed that in the very first sentence there was the word rulŝtuparo (escalator), but as early as page 18 it had inconsistently become eskalatoro. Well, OK, I said to myself, on page 4 we're seeing through Egor's eyes, but on page 18 the viewpoint was already Anton's, and perhaps they use different words for the same instrument.

Ktp.

But there are other problems. For example, in one place pergamene (on parchment) became pergamente; and through the entire book infero (Hell) somehow became inferno. I was ready to excuse the completely unofficial eksklamacii (to exclaim) but not the fact that it was used not with its PIV definition but simply as a synonym of elkrii. Etc.

I would really recommend to Impeto to pay somewhat more attention to the quality, through careful editing and criticism, of the next two translations in the series.

Having said as much, I can recommend the book to those who like the modern genre of "urban fantasy". It is certainly a very interesting tale, one that you can't put down.
